Virtual Private Network (VPN)

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) allows you to securely link two or more machines together over the Internet. Such a network setup comes in useful when it is not feasible to have a direct network connection. A VPN is widely used when requiring to link offices which are a great distance apart and for individuals to connect to the network from a remote location. This allows clients to use the facilities of the local network even when not physically in the same location.

Frequently Asked Questions

So what sort of Internet connection is required?

It depends the amount of traffic you expect to be transferred. If you are linking offices together then you would normally want a fast broadband connection. On the other hand if the VPN would normally be used from a dial-up connection then any Internet connection will do.

Does my ISP allow this?

You should check with your ISP as all of them have different terms and conditions.

How secure is a VPN?

As long as it is configured properly a VPN is very secure.
